Short devotional from J.R. Miller - Sufficient Strength

Sufficient strength!

(J.R. Miller, "The Shining Light" 1911)

"As your days--so shall your strength be!" Deuteronomy 33:25

Strength was not promised in advance--enough for all of life, or even for a year, or for a month. The promise was, that for each day, when it came with its own needs, duties, battles, and griefs--enough strength would be given. As the burden increased--more strength would be imparted. As the night grew darker--the lamps would shine out more brightly.

The important thought here is, that strength is not emptied into our hearts in bulk--a supply for years to come--but is kept in reserve, and divinely given day by day, just as the day's needs require.

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11

"On the day I called, You answered me; You increased strength within me!" Psalm 138:3

Failure and Success: The Scramble for Popularity - Excellent devotional by A.W. Tozer

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.--Matthew 5:11-12

Popular Judaism slew the prophets and crucified Christ. Popular Christianity killed the Reformers, jailed the Quakers and drove John Wesley into the streets. When it comes to religion, the crowds are always wrong. At any time there are a few who see, and the rest are blinded. To stand by the truth of God against the current religious vogue is always unpopular and may be downright dangerous.... Christianity's scramble for popularity today is an unconscious acknowledgment of spiritual decline. Her eager fawning at the feet of the world's great is a grief to the Holy Spirit and an embarrassment to the sons of God. The lick-spittle attitude of popular Christian leaders toward the world's celebrities would make such men as Elijah or George Fox sick to the stomach....

Lot was a popular believer. He sat in the gates of Sodom. But when trouble struck, he had to send quick for Abraham to get him out of the jam. And where did they find Abraham? Out on the hillside, far away from the fashionable crowds. It has always been so. For every Elijah there have always been 400 popular prophets of Baal. For every Noah there is always a vast multitude who will not believe it is going to rain.

We are sent to bless the world, but never are we told to compromise with it. The Next Chapter After the Last, 20-21.

"Lord, give me the spirit of Elijah; give me the faith of Noah. Deliver me from the scramble for popularity and strengthen me to serve alone, oblivious to the roar of the crowds. Amen."

The Carnal Desire to Make Good - AW Tozer

For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake.—2 Corinthians 4:5

Our Lord died an apparent failure, discredited by the leaders of established religion, rejected by society and forsaken by His friends. The man who ordered Him to the cross was the successful statesman whose hand the ambitious hack politician kissed. It took the resurrection to demonstrate how gloriously Christ had triumphed and how tragically the governor had failed.

Yet today the professed church seems to have learned nothing. We are still seeing as men see and judging after the manner of man's judgment. How much eager-beaver religious work is done out of a carnal desire to make good. How many hours of prayer are wasted beseeching God to bless projects that are geared to the glorification of little men. How much sacred money is poured out upon men who, in spite of their tear-in-the-voice appeals, nevertheless seek only to make a fair show in the flesh.

The true Christian should turn away from all this. Especially should ministers of the gospel search their own hearts and look deep into their inner motives. No man is worthy to succeed until he is willing to fail. No man is morally worthy of success in religious activities until he is willing that the honor of succeeding should go to another if God so wills. Born After Midnight, 58."

As one called to lead people to honor and worship the Almighty God, I recognize that personal pride and self-glorification are so despicable. Yet if I were honest, I would probably have to admit that I struggle with pride more than any other sin. Deliver me, Lord, I pray. For Jesus' sake, Amen."

Small Tokens of Goodness

How often do you stop and ponder God's goodness? I mean thanking Him for little things in life. We certainly tend to thank Him for bigger blessings, but we rarely stop and consistently thank Him for small things the way we should.

I am sitting on my back screened-in porch, with a nice breeze blowing, looking at a gaggle of geese with a pretty lake in the background. My wife and I are simply sitting outside enjoying the beauty of creation. We don't deserve this. The truth is that we deserve eternal wrath from God because we are not inherently righteous. We are like inconsistent sheep that are so prone to stray from God and wander off into sin.

Nevertheless, because of His great love, God has given us new life, created faith in us, drawn us to Himself, forgiven us, justified us, adopted us into His family, is in the process of changing us, and will one day make our faith sight. All of this is due to God's grace alone. He has accomplished it all through the work of Christ alone. Those are mind-blowing truths without a doubt.

However, in His goodness, He also allows us now to taste of His glorious goodness in small, countless ways. I often think about this while mowing grass in the blistering summer when I feel a cool refreshing breeze, even if it is just for a moment. I thank God for such small tokens of love and goodness.

We should all seek to be more mindful of the blessings, large and small, that God so richly pours on us. When we do, we should give Him the sacrifice of praise. The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 54:6:

"With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good."

Failure and Success: Paralysis From Past Mistakes - A. W. Tozer

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.--Psalm 103:11-12

Do not let any of the things of the world or past mistakes paralyze your hearts. I believe there are Christians who have allowed some of their past mistakes to paralyze them. You were so bright and cheerful in your spiritual life once, and then you made some tragic mistake or had something happen to you. You got out of it somehow, and prayed and wept your way out of it. But it did something to you, and now you cannot lick it. Past wrongs that have been done to you, past failures, times you thought you were going to win and did not, or present sins or discouragement-these things are not mental at all. They are deeper than that; they are subconscious, and they prevent us from believing.

I most urgently exhort you, and I trust God Almighty to deliver you; to sponge that out of your spirit; to sponge that out of your heart so you are not hindered by unbelief. Rut, Rot or Revival: The Condition of the Church, pp. 162-163

"Lord, I'm surely not the only one who desparately needs this reminder this morning. So many of us struggle with past sins, failures, or hurts. I pray for all of my fellow-servants who need deliverance, who need to have the past sponged out of their spirits and hearts. Amen."

Tokens of God's love! - John Newton - (Author of Amazing Grace)

Trials no less than comforts--are the tokens of God's love. All is regulated by His infinite wisdom. You will find cause to praise Him even for the severe afflictions.

Cisterns must be broken--but the fountain of living waters is always full and always flowing!

Gourds must wither--but the tree of life has shade and fruit sufficient for us all, and at all times!

Creatures must die--but the Lord lives!

Creatures are like candles; while they burn--they waste away; and when they are extinguished, those who depend upon them are covered with darkness. But the Lord is a Sun to His people, and His bright beams of consolation can well supply the lack of the candlelight of creature comforts!

"I know, O LORD, that in faithfulness You have afflicted me. May Your unfailing love be my comfort." Psalm 119:75-76

The More Excellent Way - Part 10

10/1/2014

We come to the last verse of 1 Cor. 13 and our last post in this brief series of considering the more perfect way. Thinking back to the start of this series, we noted that Paul was addressing the Corinthian Church on the issue of spiritual gifts. There was misunderstanding, growing tension, and a wrong emphasis regarding spiritual gifts occurring in this congregation.

In the very last verse of Chapter 12, Paul told these people to desire the more excellent way, and he spent chapter 13 exposing them to this way, the way of love. In the last post we saw that spiritual gifts will one day pass away. While there is debate over “when” this will occur, it cannot be denied that it will happen.

After clearly affirming that truth, Paul comes to the end of the matter. This is one of the most famous verses, if not the most famous in this chapter: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (v. 13)

The three qualities that Paul mentions, faith, hope, and love are all contrasted with the spiritual gifts in the context. The gifts of the Spirit and their exercise will one day pass away. However, faith, hope, and love will abide. They all will remain, but there is a preeminent quality of these, and it is love.

Faith could be described essentially as trusting God’s nature and word. It is believing and holding fast to Him and His promises. Faith is the gift God gives as the sole instrument to justify His people. Ephesians 2:8-9 states, “By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Much is written about faith in Scripture, but let’s look at one verse as a working definition: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

Faith is an assurance that what God promises He delivers. It rests upon the character, faithfulness, and word of Almighty God. It does so without visible, tangible proofs or evidence. It is vital, essential, and non-negotiable. God is the Object of faith. Christ’s work is the basis upon which God keeps His word to justify the ungodly. Our faith looks to God’s promises and Christ’s work and rests solely upon that as the only basis for being reconciled and made acceptable to God, by God.

Hope is quite similar to faith according to Scripture. Hope is best understood as a confident expectation that what God promised will come to pass. It is not some unfounded wish, but it is a confident expectation that God will bring to pass what He has promised. It enables those who have it to endure and remain steadfast.

Hope also involves confidence when there is nothing visible to strengthen it. Consider Romans 8:23-25, “We ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

Hope in the realization of God’s promises allows for patience and endurance. If one can see results, there is no need for hope. Hope in the truest sense is present when there is no visible confirmation.

Faith and hope are glorious results of the work of God in the lives of His people. They are not natural to us but the product of the new birth that has occurred in us by the power of the Holy Spirit. They are created, nurtured, strengthened, and upheld by God’s working in the lives of His people. In spite of their glorious nature, love is greater.

Think about this. In the age to come, our faith will be made sight. Our hopes will be realized. God will continue to sustain us eternally. We will never get to the point of self-sufficiency. However, our eyes will perceive clearly the glory and beauty of Christ. Our minds will more fully grasp the eternal and infinite although it will never be exhaustive. Faith and hope will abide, but there will be visible realities present, whereas such visible realities are not present in this age.

Love on the other hand, I believe, will continue to deepen as eternity rolls on and as we behold the Lamb of God. Our minds will steadily grasp the greatness of God and His amazing grace. We will perceive His goodness and mercy more fully. Love for Him will never reach its zenith. It will deepen, grow, and develop the more we grasp of God’s Person.

The longer I am married to my wife, the more I know her intimately; the more I know her, the more my love for her continues to grow. I love her more now than I did when I first met her and married her. If that concept is true for fallen, finite, creatures, how much more for a fully redeemed creature to love, adore, and worship an all glorious, all sufficient, holy, majestic, infinite Creator?

Does this excite you? Does this astound you? Does this intrigue you and create a sense of wonder and amazement? If it does, why stress, fight, and worry over those things that will come to an end?

   Desire the more excellent way!
